Dawson advises people not to share so much information on social media, including things like their pet’s name and family information, which can all be exploited to create a convincing message that is usually used for identity fraud.
But an October cybersecurity campaign is helping the public learn more about the importance of online safety.
“Canadians are concerned cyber attacks are only going to increase…and we’re in a digital age and everything we do is online, and puts us at risk.”
He added that if an email or message looks too good to be true, it probably is.
“And if there’s an urgency or a call to action quickly, then probably be speculative or look into it further,” he said.
